Updated: April 16, 2005 The Ladies Club of Pylos

The cultural activity of a place is integral to its course in time and history. This is the place where you can look up any cultural events that take place in Pylos. In the next weeks, the page will be hosting the activities of the Ladies Club in Pylos for the second half of 2003.

The Ladies' Society of Pylos

The Ladies' Society of Pylos was founded in 1981 and up to this day constitutes an integral part of the cultural life of Pylos. It has been established with noble motives and goals which have arisen by the concern of all who have realised the great everyday changes of the modern way of life.

The Society, from the vevry first moment it was founded, has contributed spiritually, culturally, philantropically in the life of Pylos. It organises lectures, excursions, and a variety of events. It intervenes in the cultural life of the area despite the hard conditions and is an integral part of everyday reality in Pylos.

One of its many goals is the projection of our cultural inheritance and the preservation of our folk tradition. For this reason it supports a fold dance group that covers all ages. It also supports a ballet group. (All the above information is an excrept from the book Πύλος: Διαχρονική- Διεπιστημονική Εξέταση. Πρακτικά Α' Τοπικου Συνεδρίου 1-3 Μαΐου 1998. Activities of the Ladies' Society of Pylos

15 March

The Ladies' Society of Pylos has organised a book presentation and speech at the Nestor Institute (the conference room at the old High School of Pylos), on Saturday the 15th of March 2003, at 19:00.

The whole event was under the auspices of the Perfecture of Messina and included:

  • Speech by the author, historian and researcher Mr Harry Tserkenedes titled: "The War of Independence of 1821 under the light of the French Archives"
  • Presentation of the recent book by the above mentioned author, titled: "Yelena Apolloneia, the Balkan Girl"

The book was to be presented by the aurhor-historian Mr Panos D. Kosmopoulos but due to an unexpected problem his presentation was red by the actor Mr Karakasides.

Members of the board of the Ladies' Society in the Nestor Institute, with Mrs Tserkenedes, the audience and the speaker, Mr Harry Tserkenedes.

Mrs Niki Konstantakopoulou presents Mr Tserkendedes, Mr Karakasides is reading Mr Kosmopoulos' presentation, and later the talented actors, the Karakasides couple, read parts of the boook.

The audience which filled the conference room, payed great attention to all the readings and was especially thrilled byt the parts of the speech that refered to Pylos and it's presentation through the French Archives.

Mr Tserkenedes also presented a series of slides form areas of Kappadokia, Pontus and Konstantinople featuring cultural and religious monuments that are slowle being erased by the passing of time and the indeference of the people. Mr Papageorgiou also addressed the event and the message of the Metropolis via the priest of Pylos. The audience had the chance to askquestions. A reception followed, with a delicious and richly provided buffet, by the Ladies' Society.

Cultural Society of Pylos "Navarino"

The cultural society was founded during a time of intense internal emigration from the countryside to Athens in the '50ies. Its main goal was and still remains the cultural aspect with all that the term implies: social link for the Pylians all over the world and especially in Athens and contribution of all of its members to its homeland, Pylos, in order to solve all local problems in any possible way: spiritually, materially, morally, socially, involving everyone who wants to turn into "work" their nostalgia about the place where they first glimpsed light. The first meeting took place in 1954 and the current board still works under the same motives of the past in order to organise a series of events that realise the goals established in the best way possible. The society nowadays has its own private office at 13 Veranzerou street, which operate as "The house of Pylos".

The office includes:
1) A specialised library with works about Pylos, by greek and foreign writers donated by the Foundation of Kostas and Helen Ouranis, the publishing house of Dim. Papadimas, the honorary citizen of Pylos, the writer Ant. Samarakis.
2) Video - Cassetes with the events organised by the society (lectures, concerts), photo yearbooks from 1954 up to now and artistic renderings of Pylos.

There is also a youth club established in 1977. It also features:

  • Donations for the Church of Pylos.
  • Rallies about the house of K. Tsiklitiras.
  • Donations of musical instruments to the Philarmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Pylos.
  • Donatiions of athletic material and computers to the Primary School of Pylos as well as the playground.
  • Financial support of the desolate Pylian families during the holidays.
  • Financial support for the decoration of the Church of Pylos.
